Kojic Acid Dipalmitate Bulk Price: How Buyers Should Compare 98% and 99% Quotes

Current commercial pages can contain identity-field conflicts, so a low price is not useful until the material itself is verified.

For like-for-like KAD offers, normalize the stated assay. A 98% material contains 980 g of stated KAD per kilogram; a 99% material contains 990 g/kg. That is only about a 1.02% active-content advantage.

If a 99% quote costs 20%, 50% or 100% more than a 98% quote, the extra premium is not explained by assay alone. The buyer should look for another verified difference: analytical control, batch documentation, identity confirmation, impurity profile, MOQ, packaging, lead time, stability evidence or supplier qualification.

Examples included 99% KAD offers around $15-35/kg, $35-42/kg and $55-70/kg with 1 kg minimum orders. Other results showed ranges such as $20-45/kg, $25-60/kg and $30-45/kg. At the high end, one listing displayed $150-200/kg for KAD with a 1 kg MOQ.

That spread does not prove that the 'market price' runs from $15 to $200 per kilogram.

A marketplace number may represent:

  • a starting price
  • a quantity tier
  • a promotional price
  • a sample-oriented price
  • a lead-generation figure
  • a different specification
  • a product with incomplete or inconsistent identity fields

Buyer action: record the verification date and label each public number as 'display price' until a supplier returns a quote for the exact KAD grade, quantity, packaging and delivery basis you requested.

Verify KAD Identity Before Comparing Price

The first price-control step is chemical identity.

Authoritative KAD references identify Kojic Acid Dipalmitate as CAS 79725-98-7, formula C38H66O6 and molecular weight about 618.9 g/mol. TCI's K0050 reference product is specified above 98% by HPLC.

Current supplier and marketplace pages do not always present those fields consistently. A name/CAS/formula conflict does not prove fraud, but it is a valid reason to stop the comparison and request the current specification, COA and product code.

Do not compare a KAD quote with a Kojic Acid quote simply because both use the word 'kojic.' Kojic Acid is a different molecule and has a different CAS number, molecular weight, solubility behavior and regulatory treatment.

How Much Stated KAD Is in 98% and 99% Material?

For like-for-like KAD materials:

Active grams per kg = 1000 × assay fraction

98% KAD = 980 g stated KAD per kg.

99% KAD = 990 g stated KAD per kg.

The difference is 10 g of stated KAD per kilogram of material.

That is a useful normalization step, but it does not prove equivalent impurity profiles, equivalent identity control or equivalent formulation performance.

How Do You Calculate Cost per Gram of Stated KAD?

Use:

Cost per gram of stated KAD = quoted price per kg ÷ active grams per kg

Hypothetical example A:
98% KAD quoted at $35/kg
$35 ÷ 980 ≈ $0.0357 per gram of stated KAD

Hypothetical example B:
99% KAD quoted at $42/kg
$42 ÷ 990 ≈ $0.0424 per gram of stated KAD

In this example, the 99% offer remains more expensive after active-content normalization.

That does not make it a worse purchase. It means the buyer should identify what else the premium buys: stronger identity controls, better batch documentation, tighter impurity requirements, smaller MOQ, better packaging, faster lead time or another verified benefit.

How Much More Should 99% Cost Than 98% Based on Assay Alone?

If every other commercial and quality variable were identical, the assay-only break-even ratio is:

99 ÷ 98 ≈ 1.0102

So 99% material contains only about 1.02% more stated KAD than 98% material.

If a 98% offer costs $35/kg, an assay-only cost-equivalent 99% offer would be about:

$35 × 99 ÷ 98 ≈ $35.36/kg

If the actual 99% quote is $42/kg, the extra premium is not explained by the additional one percentage point of assay alone.

This does not mean 99% should only cost 1.02% more. It means the buyer should be able to identify the additional specification, quality-control or commercial value that justifies the rest of the premium.

Why Can HPLC, COA and Identity Evidence Matter More Than 1% Assay?

Because a purity percentage is only one line in a specification.

For KAD, useful evidence may include:

  • batch-specific COA
  • actual HPLC result
  • method or method reference
  • product code
  • structural identity evidence where used
  • melting range where part of the specification
  • appearance
  • current specification
  • TDS and SDS
  • solubility or incorporation guidance

TCI's KAD reference, for example, includes HPLC purity, melting-point information and NMR structure confirmation. That does not make TCI's panel an industry standard. It demonstrates the kind of identity detail that may be available.

A 99% listing with inconsistent identity fields or no batch documentation may create more qualification work than a clearly documented 98% offer.

Buyer action: compare evidence packages, not just percentages.

Should You Pay More Because a Supplier Says KAD Is 'More Stable'?

Not without condition-specific evidence.

KAD is frequently marketed as a more stable derivative of Kojic Acid. However, stability is not a single universal property.

A 2022 peer-reviewed study compared Kojic Acid and KAD under liquid oxidative stress induced with hydrogen peroxide. Under those tested conditions, KAD degraded more rapidly than Kojic Acid.

The lesson is not that KAD is always less stable. The lesson is that a general 'more stable' claim is too vague to justify a sourcing premium.

Ask:

  • What stress condition was tested?
  • Was the test on raw material or a finished formulation?
  • What solvent or emulsion system was used?
  • What temperature, light and oxygen conditions were tested?
  • What analytical method measured degradation?
  • Is there data relevant to your own formulation?

If the supplier cannot connect the stability claim to your use case, do not treat the marketing phrase as a quantified value driver.

How Do MOQ and Quantity Tiers Change the Real Purchase?

MOQ changes the amount of cash and inventory required to qualify a supplier.

Initial material spend = quoted price per kg × MOQ

Hypothetical example:
Supplier A: $30/kg, MOQ 25 kg -> $750 initial material spend.
Supplier B: $42/kg, MOQ 1 kg -> $42 initial material spend.
